ASTM F2100 rates medical face masks at three levels. Level 3 offers the highest fluid resistance, for procedures with heavy spray, splatter or aerosol.

When Dental Teams Need ASTM Level 3 Face Masks

Dental procedures and cleanings expose the team to airborne particles and contaminants, and Level 1 and Level 2 masks offer only minimal protection against them. Richmond recommends ASTM Level 3 masks for dental procedures, including cleanings and any work with a drill or other handpiece. Follow your practice’s infection control protocols and current CDC guidance when setting mask requirements.

What does ASTM Level 3 mean on a face mask?

ASTM Level 3 is the highest of the three performance levels in ASTM F2100, the U.S. standard for medical face masks. A Level 3 mask filters at least 98% of bacteria and sub-micron particles and resists synthetic blood at 160 mmHg.

What is the difference between ASTM Level 2 and Level 3 masks?

Both filter at least 98% of bacteria and sub-micron particles. Level 3 adds higher fluid resistance – 160 mmHg versus 120 mmHg – for procedures with heavy spray or splatter.
